That is why Toys for Tots celebrates Not So Random Acts of Kindness. The Program sees the impact of intentional acts of kindness every time someone chooses to give, volunteer, or lend support—not just during the holidays, but in the middle of ordinary days, busy seasons, and challenging moments.   

Thanks to the not so random acts of generosity of local Coordinators, donors, National Corporate Partners, and supporting organizations, the Program distributed 24 million toys, books, and other gifts to nearly 11 million children in need in 2025.

These contributions weren’t random gestures. They were choices made by individuals and communities who believed every child deserves hope, comfort, and joy. Together, these choices created a nationwide ripple effect that reached far beyond city centers and suburban neighborhoods.

Some of those ripples traveled farther than most.

Across Alaska’s North Slope and Northwest Arctic Borough, U.S. Marines with Detachment Delta Company, 4th Law Enforcement Battalion, Force Headquarters Group, Marine Forces Reserve, carried out a mission defined by purpose and resilience. As part of Operation Polar Knight, Marines delivered nearly 14,000 pounds of toys to some of the most remote communities in the United States—places where winter roads don’t exist, weather can ground aircraft for days, and access to basic goods is limited.

This mission was only possible because of collective efforts: the generosity of the American public, the dedication of the Anchorage Toys for Tots Chapter, and the determination of the Marines who carried the mission across snow, ice, and Arctic skies. Without these combined efforts, children living in some of the most isolated regions of the country would not experience the magic of the holiday season.

“These deliveries weren’t random gestures either. They were purposeful acts of kindness—planned months in advance, supported by countless volunteers, and executed with precision in some of the harshest conditions on Earth,” said Lieutenant General Jim Laster, USMC (Retired), CEO of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation. “Every gift was a conscious choice to support a child in need and a promise to keep the spirit of the season shining, even in the most remote corners of Alaska,” he emphasized.

Operation Polar Knight is just one example of how intentional acts of kindness transforms lives. Across the country, the Program’s supporters continue to make a difference all year long. Through year-round literacy efforts, support for children in Foster Care, and disaster response and recovery distribution events, donors help ensure that children in need receive comfort, encouragement, and opportunity.

Fueled by the remarkable generosity of the American people, nearly 880 local chapters, National Corporate Partners, fellow non-profits, local businesses and organizations, and tens of thousands of devoted volunteers, Toys for Tots remained steadfast in their mission of being a year-round force for good.

From small towns to major cities across the Nation, the Marine Toys for Tots Program distributed toys, books, and other gifts through initiatives such as the Literacy Program, Foster Care Program, Disaster Response and Recovery Program, and their annual Holiday Campaign. These efforts reflect the belief that all children deserve comfort, joy, and encouragement no matter the season.

During the spring and summer months, Toys for Tots partnered with other non‑profits to host special distributions that brought hope to disadvantaged children. Whether offering emotional comfort to children whose families were impacted by natural disasters, providing resources to children navigating the Foster Care System, or distributing educational books and resources to Title I funded schools, the Program ensured that its mission extends beyond Christmastime. Each distribution was more than an event—it was a reminder to children that they are valued, remembered, and cared for by their communities.

During their flagship Holiday Campaign, local chapters worked tirelessly to collect donations, organize events, and deliver gifts directly to children in need. Marines, civilian Coordinators, and volunteers joined forces with schools, churches, civic groups, and community organizations to ensure that every child had at least one gift to open on Christmas morning. Toys for Tots is still finalizing their 2025 Holiday Campaign results, but early totals are already showing they are on track to reach over 11 million children in need.

These grassroots efforts transformed gymnasiums into toy warehouses, parking lots into distribution centers, and local businesses into hubs of generosity. The sights and sounds of these moments—rows of toys, families gathering with anticipation, and volunteers working shoulder to shoulder—captured the true spirit of the season and demonstrated the power of communities united in kindness.

At 13 years old, he was diagnosed with acinic cell carcinoma, an extremely rare form of pediatric cancer.  Throughout his stay in the hospital, Sergeant Toromanides faced uncertainty and isolation, but one act of generosity inspired his future.

Marines from the local Toys for Tots Chapter, in full Dress Blues, visited the children's ward to brighten the holidays for kids spending Christmas away from home. Sergeant Toromanides, then a young teen with no knowledge of the Marine Corps or Toys for Tots, was stunned when a Marine Sergeant walked into his room and placed a Christmas gift in his hands.

“I had no idea who they were or what Toys for Tots was,” he recalled. “But I remember thinking—wow, you guys are in the military, and you’re giving out toys? It was one of those moments where I just wanted to know more.”

That simple act of kindness captures the essence of Toys for Tots: that no child should feel forgotten, especially during the holidays. What Sergeant Toromanides received that Christmas wasn't just a toy; it was proof that hope endures, even in the darkest times.

In 2016, Sergeant Toromanides enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and has been cancer-free for 14 years. His journey has come full circle, and he credits his success to that one moment of connection with Toys for Tots and the generosity of our donors.

The Marines don’t know him. The toy store staff members don’t know him. Even Toys for Tots doesn’t know him. His identity remains a secret. He doesn't seek recognition. He simply wants to carve out moments of joy for children who might otherwise wake up to nothing on Christmas morning.

This quiet benefactor has already donated more than $750,000 in toys. That's not just a number—it's thousands of children experiencing the magic of unwrapping a gift. It's the light in a parent's eyes knowing their child will experience joy this Christmas.

That magic found its way to three-year-old Nico, who had one simple wish: a “doggy.” After losing their home, Nico and his mother, Mira, were living out of a car. “I felt like the world’s worst mom,” Mira said. “We had no home, no presents—how could I possibly give him a dog?”

Thanks to the compassion of donors and the swift efforts of local volunteers, Nico awoke on Christmas morning to find a walkable toy dog and a book about dog breeds. “I hadn’t seen him smile like that since we lost our home,” Mira recalled. “That night, he fell asleep holding the toy in his arms.”

(NewsUSA) - The end of summer means back-to-school season for families across the country. As parents shop for new backpacks and clothes, they should be sure not to overlook one of the most important parts of the back-to-school checklist – the visual health of their child.

During the first years of life, a child's vision is constantly changing and developing. Healthy eyes and quality vision are important for reading, writing, and learning in the classroom, and vision issues that are left undiagnosed and untreated can lead to learning disabilities and delays in development. That’s where vision screening comes in.

“Clear vision is important for success in school and at home,” said Dr. David Hunter, president of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS). “Kids don’t always realize that they have vision problems, as they often assume that everyone else sees the world the same way that they do. That is why regular vision screenings are so important. Good vision increases not only their ability to learn, but also their self-confidence. And vision screening in the early years can detect treatable conditions like amblyopia (‘lazy eye’).”

To increase access to eye exams for kids who are referred by vision screening, the Children’s Eye Foundation of AAPOS funds the All Children See program. The program provides an opportunity for kids who are uninsured or underinsured to receive a no-cost comprehensive eye exam from a volunteer pediatric ophthalmologist near them. The American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS) is an organization of more than 2,000 pediatric ophthalmologists working across the U.S. and Canada to advance the quality of children's eye care. The Children's Eye Foundation is its philanthropic arm, which works to improve quality of life for visually impaired kids worldwide. 

“Early and frequent vision screenings can mean the difference between permanent vision loss and a lifetime of good vision,” said Dr. Christie Morse, executive vice president of the Children’s Eye Foundation. “Our AAPOS doctors envision a world where every child is thriving with the best sight possible.”

School nurses who might be unsure when to refer a child to their pediatric ophthalmologist can find guidance at childrenseyefoundation.org. Nurses and parents are encouraged to look out for these warning signs, even if a child is not referred by vision screening:

• Does not read at grade level
• Misaligned eyes
• Squinting

Every student deserves to walk into school embraced by the excitement of learning—not burdened by what they lack.  Marine Toys for Tots—the Nation’s premier Christmastime children’s charity—has grown into a powerful, year-round force for good. Among its year-round programs, the Toys for Tots Literacy Program continues to provide pages of possibility and ignite a love of reading to disadvantaged children well beyond the holiday season through Operation Turn the Page.

The Operation Turn the Page initiative focuses on reaching children in underserved communities who are attending Title I funded schools, where access to books and literacy resources is limited. By distributing high-quality, age-appropriate books and educational resources through schools, libraries, and trusted community partners, the Program empowers children to strengthen reading skills—and unlock their full potential.

“A backpack, notebook, or set of pencils might seem like small items, but for a child who has none of these essentials, they represent hope, dignity, and the chance to start school on equal footing with their peers,” says LtGen Laster, CEO of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation.

This need is urgent:  National assessments show that two-thirds of American fourth graders are not reading proficiently—and more than a third are reading below grade level. Without early intervention, these children fall further behind—facing challenges in school that often carry into adulthood.

“Reading is the foundation for everything—education, opportunity, and lifelong success,” LtGen Laster emphasizes. “With this initiative, we’re not just providing books to children in need—we’re providing hope, confidence, and the ability to dream bigger.”

The Program provided backpacks filled with school supplies and books to hundreds of local foster children in Mt Laurel, New Jersey, as part of their back-to-school summer distributions. Thanks to local Toys for Tots Coordinator, Gina Capate, and her team of volunteers, the foster children were welcomed into a space designed just for them—a place where joy, choice, and care were front and center.

One foster child said, “I picked a book about space and one about animals. I’m going to read them both tonight!”

“For many of the children we support, the books we provide might be the first book they’ve ever owned,” LtGen Laster adds. “Each one is a building block toward a brighter future and will open a world of possibilities and opportunities for these children.”

The Toys for Tots Literacy Program also recently provided back-to-school essentials to children living in Austin, Texas. In partnership with Tackle Hunger and Shepherd of the Hills Presbyterian Church, the event welcomed hundreds of children attending Title I funded schools, and each child received essential school supplies and a toy to mark the start of a new school year—small gifts that carried big meaning.

"This wasn't just a back-to-school event—it was a reminder that every child deserves to feel prepared, seen, and celebrated," said one volunteer. 

Through Operation Turn the Page, supporters help the Toys for Tots Literacy Program provide educational resources to disadvantaged children. In 2024, the Program delivered 2.8 million books—building confidence for children who once felt left behind, developing reading skills that create lifelong learners, and filling backpacks with possibilities.
